First view of Andrew Luck isn't a big one

INDIANAPOLIS -- Andrew Luck’s first official practice with the full Indianapolis Colts team was greeted with much fanfare, though it was a simple walkthrough.

He surprised some teammates by making adjustments at the line and displayed the sort of huddle presence the team expects from the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. But let’s be honest, there was little we could assess from a light hour on the field. We’ll see more in a bit when the team is out there again in helmets, operating with some speed.

The quarterback out of Stanford has not been with the team beyond a short rookie minicamp because of an NFL rule that dictates guys can’t be with their teams until their class has finished its semester.

So today has a fresh-start, first-day feel and the media attention to go with it.

“He’s going to be a crucial part for us and having him here for this minicamp is huge for the team,” veteran safety Antoine Bethea said. “Everybody is here now, and we’re striving to build something here.”

I’m heading out to see that second segment of practice, and will be back with a bigger take on Luck and the Colts after that.
