A weekly examination of the Colts’ ESPN.com Power Ranking:
Preseason: 10 | Last Week: 14 | ESPN.com Power Ranking since 2002
Most people, myself included, thought the Colts would drop in the rankings this week after they played at San Francisco on Sunday. Looks like we were all wrong. It turns out the Colts tied five other teams for the biggest jump in the rankings, moving up five spots from last week. They deserved the substantial jump after they went on the road and beat the defending NFC champions at their own game. The voting on where the Colts should be ranked was all across the board.
Here’s how the voters ranked the Colts:
Ashley Fox: 8
John Clayton: 13
Dan Graziano: 12
Jamison Hensley: 10
Mike Sando: 6
Kevin Seifert: 7
The Colts are currently the sixth-best AFC team in the rankings, behind Denver, New England, Cincinnati, Miami and Kansas City. Indianapolis will play Denver, Cincinnati and Kansas City this season. The Dolphins handed the Colts their only loss in Week 2. Nobody in the AFC is catching Denver in the rankings this season. Quarterback Peyton Manning can go ahead and collect his fifth MVP trophy now, too.
Don’t expect another big jump by the Colts next week -- unless a lot of the teams in front of them lose -- because they play at winless Jacksonville on Sunday.
