NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of Tennessee Titans training camp:
Defensive linemen Mike Martin (hamstring) and Antonio Johnson (knee) remained out. Fullback Collin Mooney was out sick. Linebackers Jonathan Willard and David Gilbert didn't practice either, and coach Ken Whisenhunt was tight-lipped about their injuries. Because preseason injuries to fourth-string linebackers are vital secrets.
The Titans were out of pads as they started to wind down for Saturday night’s preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers at LP Field.
Corners worked against receivers in a period that focused on route combinations. Receiver Julian Horton looked to collect a pass from Mettenberger, but Anthony closed in on Horton from behind and stuck with the play. The ball eventually came free.
In one-on-one red zone throws from the 5-yard line, Jake Locker hit Kendall Wright in the back left corner of the end zone over Coty Sensabaugh and Justin Hunter went up and over Blidi Wreh-Wilson for another scoring pass. My Instagram moment of that catch.
Team periods featured crowd noise from speakers for the second time during camp.
Nate Washington was standing behind receivers coach Shawn Jefferson at one point and Jefferson stepped back and stepped on his foot. A wincing Washington complained about Jefferson wearing cleats for practice.
Locker made a terrible red zone throw for Washington. Cornerback Jason McCourty was trailing Washington cutting left to right across the front of the end zone, and the pass was well behind McCourty, who couldn’t get his hands back for it. It bounced off his shoulder and Bernard Pollard plucked it out of the air for a pick. Perhaps the worst decision and throw combination of camp for Locker.
Hunter had another leaping end zone catch from Locker over Blidi Wreh-Wilson and inside linebacker Zaviar Gooden.
The Titans worked on specific situations like 12 seconds left from midfield where the offense had one timeout and needed a field goal. Whisenhunt said reviewing the tape on those will tell a lot about how both sides reacted.
The Titans play Saturday night against Green Bay. Their two final practices open to the public are Monday and Tuesday at 2:50 local time.
