Given the state of the Texans' salary cap, they aren't likely to make a big impact on free agency this year.
The NFL draft, on the other hand, should provide an instant starter who will be able to make a big impact. This, of course, since Houston's 2-14 season earned the team the first overall pick in the draft.
The question now lies in what they'll do with that pick.
No team has taken a defensive player with the top pick since the Texans did it with defensive end Mario Williams in 2006. Since then teams have taken five quarterbacks and two offensive tackles -- Jake Long and Eric Fisher.
Defensive end, offensive tackle and quarterback are all directions in which the Texans could go, but quarterback is their most pressing need.
