What to make of Texans' first cuts

The Houston Texans made their first cuts official Tuesday. They released 11 straight up, waived/injured two and placed one player on injured reserve, to get their roster to 75. They'll likely make their final cuts on Friday, a day before the league mandates teams get their rosters to 53.

The list (with notes on some players)

FB Zach Boren -- Boren had a good outing in the Texans' first preseason game, but this is not a team that needed another fullback.

ILB Elliot Coffey - Was working at Enterprise, cleaning a car for another rental place, when he got a call for a workout with the Texans. Spent a couple weeks here.

G Bryan Collins

ILB Ja'Gared David

RB Ray Graham - Always trailed Deji Karim, Cierre Wood and Dennis Johnson in the race to be the Texans' third running back.

CB Travis Howard

QB Stephen McGee

T Nick Mondek

DE Earl Okine

TE Adam Schiltz

P Andrew Shapiro - Punted very well in place of Shane Lechler in the first two preseason games. Getting cut now means he'll have a chance to catch on elsewhere.

Waived/Injured (players who will revert to injured reserve if they aren't claimed on waivers)

DE David Hunter - University of Houston player who struggled through injuries last season. Sprained his left ankle.

WR Mike Smith - Rookie out of Connecticut, waived with a left knee injury.

Injured Reserve

WR Alec Lemon - Lemon made some noise in the preseason, but the receiver room is full and he never really had a shot to make the active roster. The fact that the Texans placed him straight on IR, instead of waiving him injured, means they had some concern he could be claimed while going through waivers. Good sign for Lemon.
