Chiefs go small again

The Chiefs are going small Friday night.

Fourteen picks after taking tiny Mississippi running back/returner/receiver Dexter McCluster, the Chiefs took Alabama defensive back Javier Arenas. He is a playmaker. Like McCluster, Arenas is 5-foot-8.

Arenas is the compensation Kansas City received from Atlanta in the Tony Gonzalez trade last year. He was the No. 50 pick of the draft. Because he was the compensation for one of the most popular and best players in Kansas City history, the expectation will be high.

This is a questionable pack, since cornerback is one of Kansas City’s best stocked potions with third-year players Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr. And McCluster is a returner like Arenas. Still, Arenas is a playmaker and he could play the nickel.

But like McCluster, the pick may have been bit of a reach. Still, I expect these two players to provide some excitement in Kansas City.

Along with No. 5 pick Eric Berry, a safety from Tennessee, all three of Kansas City’s picks are from the SEC.
