Here is a look at the Chiefs and what needs to be done after the break:
Reason they are in their current state: This team has bought into coach Todd Haley’s system. Kansas City went 4-12 last season and won a total of 10 games from 2007 to 2009. But the Chiefs look different this year. They have a better coaching staff, better weapons on offense, better energy on defense and a fine special teams unit. This is a team that has already won a couple of tough games and it believes in itself.
Best player so far: There are a lot of candidates, but I’m going with running back Jamaal Charles. The dynamic third-year tailback has 238 yards on 34 carries. He is averaging 7.0 yards a carry. Thomas Jones may be the starter, but Charles has been special.
What needs to be done: More of the same. The thing about this team is that it is young and it will improve throughout the season. So, continued progress needs to be made. Quarterback Matt Cassel also has to improve steadily. He was much better in Week 3 than in the first two weeks. If he can get better, the Chiefs will be in good shape.
Fearless forecast: Kansas City will win at least 10 games and it will make the playoffs. The Chiefs already have a two-game lead in the AFC West. After playing at the Colts and the Texans after the bye, Kansas City’s schedule gets very manageable the rest of the season. I can easily see this team going, at least, 7-6 the rest of the way.
