We have two AFC West rematches this Sunday.
The division-leading Chiefs host the Broncos and second-place San Diego hosts Oakland. The Broncos and Raiders won the first meeting of these matchups at home earlier in the season. The fine folks at ESPN Stats & Information broke down some areas both the Chiefs and Chargers might want to attack Denver quarterback Kyle Orton and Oakland quarterback Jason Campbell, respectively.
Let’s check it out:
Kansas City against Orton:
ESPN Stats & Information has concluded the Chiefs might want to blitz Orton more. Kansas City had a pass rush of four or fewer players on 63 percent of Orton’s dropbacks in Week 10. Orton threw four touchdown passes in those situations.
When Kansas City blitzed five or more rushers, Orton completed 33 percent of his passes. His passer rating against a standard rush was 155.1. It was 47.2 against a blitz. I wonder what the Chiefs should do Sunday?
San Diego against Campbell:
According to ESPN Stats & Information, Campbell ate up the Chargers when San Diego, which has the No. 1 defense in the NFL, had at least five defensive backs on the field. He completed 7 of 8 passes for 120 yards with a 118.8 passer rating.
However, the Chargers fared well against Campbell when they used their base 3-4 defense. Campbell has not been good against 3-4 defenses all season. Campbell completed 4 of 8 passes for 26 yards against the 3-4 defense. On the season, Campbell’s passer rating is 56.3 against the 3-4. It is 83.3 against the 4-3. Perhaps will see the Chargers use their base defense often Sunday.
