Why don’t opposing defenses blitz Philip Rivers more often?
It has been proven a traditional four-man pass rush doesn’t work against the San Diego Chargers’ quarterback. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Rivers continued his three-season dominance against the four-man blitz in the Chargers’ 34-7 win over San Francisco on Thursday night.
When San Francisco sent four or fewer pass rushers, Rivers completed 14 of 18 passes for 222 yards and all three of his touchdown passes. Rivers completed 5 of 7 passes for 51 yards against other defensive formations.
Rivers leads the NFL in passing against four or fewer pass rushers. Rivers has completed 70.4 of his passes and has thrown 22 touchdowns against four or less pass rushers with a passer’s rating of 114.4. He leads the NFL in those categories.
He was in the top two in the NFL in the past two seasons against the formation. It’s official -- Rivers eats up four-man pass rushes. Defenses need to figure that out.
