After bouncing back in 2100 from a sophomore slump, the Broncos announced that the slot receiver had offseason hip surgery. He dealt with a groin injury in 2010, but his hip issues weren’t revealed. It’s unknown how long Royal had been dealing with the issue.
Royal had 59 catches and was a punt and kick returner. Royal, a second-round choice in 2008, had a strong rookie season with 91 catches. But he slumped in his second season with just 37 catches.
He is expected to be a key part of Denver’s offense -- perhaps as a third receiver -- as Denver starts the John Fox era.
While a hip surgery is a serious matter, the Broncos said they hope Royal will be ready to participate in the minicamp season, which is to start in May. So, the Broncos clearly expect Royal to participate in training camp, which is expected to start in late July.
