AFC West mailbag

Weekend mail call:

Jared Patterson from Miss. wants to know if the Kansas City Chiefs could take a tackle such as Mississippi State’s Derek Sherrod with the No. 21 pick.

Bill Williamson: I think it’s a possibility. There are several terrific pass-rushers available, so I think the Chiefs could go that way. Chiefs coach Todd Haley recently hinted he could look for a left tackle. That would mean Branden Albert would likely move to right tackle. So, it’s an option. But if I had to guess, Albert will get one more year to show he can be the starter at left tackle and the Chiefs will grab a pass-rusher in the first round.

Chris from Modesto/San Pedro, Calif., wants to know whether I think having new Oakland head coach Hue Jackson call the offensive plays is too much to put on a first-time coach.

BW: We discussed that topic in a recent column. There are two schools of thought here. One is that the head coach needs to be involved in such an important facet of the game. The other says a coach who calls his own plays is too thinly stretched. Here’s the deal on Jackson: He got this job because his play calling gave life to Oakland’s offense. He’s going to get the opportunity to continue calling the plays until it doesn’t work.

Lion King from Point Mugu NAWC, Calif., wants to know if I think Denver will look to help Knowshon Moreno in the backfield.

BW: There’s no doubt, King. I think Denver will look both in the draft and in free agency for a running back to help Moreno. New Denver coach John Fox believes in pounding the ball on offense, so Moreno, who has had durability issues, has to have help. Denver has a pre-draft workout set up with Oklahoma’s DeMarco Murray and I’m sure there will be others backs the team investigates.
