Agent Joe Linta's thoughts went immediately to his client, Casey Wiegmann, when he heard the news.
Wiegmann is one of four NFL players to rise from tiny Aplington-Parkersburg High in rural Parkersburg, Iowa. The backbone of the school was legendary coach Ed Thomas. He was famous for not only producing NFL players but for rebuilding the school's stadium last year after a deadly tornado wrecked the town. Once again, Thomas made national news.
Wednesday morning, Thomas was shot and killed at the school.
"Casey has to be devastated," Linta said. "I know he was very proud of his coach and his school."
Wiegmann, a Pro Bowl center for the Denver Broncos, helped with the reconstruction of the stadium. He would proudly walk around the Broncos' facility with his high school's hat. The little school that could, faced tragedy and it won.
Now, it is faced with another tragedy.
"This is just terrible news," Linta said. "Just terrible."
