Will HBO come knocking in Oakland?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced they have turned down HBO’s offer to appear on “Hard Knocks” this summer.

That means there’s an opening for the show. It was reported earlier this year the Oakland Raiders were one of seven teams HBO was considering for the show, which features an NFL team during training camp.

I understand why the Raiders would be attractive to HBO. They are an up-and-coming team. They have tradition. They have Al Davis. There have numerous intriguing storylines.

It would be quality viewing.

Still, I don’t expect it to happen. The Raiders are an intensely private team. Davis never shows more of his team than he has to. The Raiders are the only team in the NFL to have a closed training camp. Media attending camp must stay in a certain, small area.

I don’t see the Raiders suddenly changing course and allowing a slew of cameras to take over their camp. While the Buccaneers’ decision to decline HBO’s offer may increase the talk of Oakland doing the show, I still believe it is a major long shot.
