Matt Cassel is leading the troops

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel led a group of mostly offensive skill-position players during a workout in Kansas City on Tuesday, the Kansas City Star reported. Cassel has been working with several teammates this spring.

The newspaper reported it was clear that Cassel was in control. He led the practice and was calling plays from the Chiefs’ playbook.

“He’s the quarterback, so he has to know what everybody is doing on every single play,’’ receiver Dexter McCluster told the newspaper. “One thing I’ve learned: Matt knows what he’s talking about.’’

In other AFC West nuggets Tuesday evening:

  • Former Chiefs’ star offensive lineman Will Sheilds was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. He will be eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame next year. So, it could be a busy time for Shields. It’s all well deserved for one of the game’s best and classiest players in recent memory.
