The Chiefs are still considering signing veteran receiver Ashley Lelie. The former Bronco and Raider worked out for Kansas City on Thursday. The Chiefs will see how their backup receivers perform in tonight's preseason opener against Houston before making a move on Lelie. He is a speedster who can help in the vertical game.
Interestingly, the deadline for teams to trade rookies has passed. San Francisco is entangled in a nasty contract battle with receiver Michael Crabtree. I wonder whether the Chiefs ever thought about putting a package together for Crabtree before the deadline. They need receivers and he'd fit Todd Haley's wide-open offense. Plus, the Chiefs have a slew of cap room. I'm sure the 49ers had no real interest in trading Crabtree. But as far as potential trading partners, the Chiefs would have fit fairly nicely.
Denver owner Pat Bowlen is not talking about a potential contract extension for receiver Brandon Marshall even after Marshall put his legal trouble behind him. That is no surprise. I'm sure the Broncos won't be interested in giving a huge deal to Marshall until he proves he can stay out of trouble for an extended period of time and that he can stay healthy. So, don't expect an extension for Marshall this year.
Denver coach Josh McDaniels is not panicking after starting quarterback Kyle Orton threw interceptions in his first three series of the game at San Francisco on Friday. Expect McDaniels to stick with Orton until he can no longer do so.
