It will be interesting to see if last year’s verbal spat between Orton and Finnegan spills out onto the playing field this year.
After Denver won at Tennessee last year, Orton ripped the Titans and Finnegan in particular. Orton said the cornerback was a cheap player, but not a good player. Upon hearing Orton’s words, Finnegan invited Orton back to Nashville so they could talk in person.
“You always hear about how tough they are and all that stuff. I don't think they are tough," Orton said. "I think they are cheap, and it was one of the cheapest games that I've ever seen out of some of those players. I thought the refs did a good job of keeping it under control."
Orton downplayed the issue on Wednesday when he spoke to reporters in Denver. This time he said that Finnegan, indeed, is a good player.
“I think it fades away, but like I said, that’s just the style of football that they play, and we’re not going to back down,” Orton said. “We’re going to play physical, too, so I’d pretty much expect the same thing going into the game this week.”
Orton said what his comments last year were uttered in the heat of the moment. He said what he said Wednesday because he’s calmed down and he doesn’t want to incite the Titans.
When the game begins, however, I wouldn’t be shocked if old memories return.
