Defense rules in blogger mock

Defense dominated the AFC West in our blog network mock draft, which was released Monday. Each division blogger picked for each team in their division for the first round.

All three of the picks in the AFC West were on the defensive side of the ball. Here is a recap of my picks: Memphis defensive tackle Dontari Poe to Kansas at City at No. 11; Illinois’ pass-rusher Whitney Mercilus at No. 18 and LSU defensive tackle Michael Brockers at No. 25.

The way the board fell, each pick was the most obvious. Interestingly, though, each pick was the last of the obvious choices. If any of the three selections were off the board, I think I would have had to gone to alternate positions.

It could be an issue in April. Each team is placed at a spot in the draft were there will likely not be a surplus of options at their need positions. But in this mock, it worked out.

Oakland traded its first-round pick to Cincinnati (No. 17) as part of the package for quarterback Carson Palmer.
