See, Oakland Raiders fans, there was nothing to worry about.
Marcel Reece is back with the team. The Raiders just announced the fullback has signed his exclusive rights tender. He had been staying away from the team because he wanted a contract extension.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the both sides try to get a deal done at some point. In the meantime, it behooved Reece to return to the team. He wasn’t gaining much from staying away as an exclusive rights free agent, and therefore had no leverage.
He is a good player and it was time for him to get back with the team and learn Greg Knapp’s system. I never thought Reece’s stance would extend into training camp, but the fact he has signed his tender erases a potential unnecessary nuisance for the team.
Reece is a versatile player who can run, receive and block. Because of the Raiders’ lack of experience and depth at tight end, I expect Reece to line up at tight end in some packages, but Oakland primarily plans to keep him as a fullback. The Raiders recently signed fullback Owen Schmitt. Because they are two different types of players and because Schmitt has a history with Knapp, I still see a way Schmitt can make the team with Reece back in the picture.
