Mailbag: What's Ricky Stanzi's future?

Mid-week mail call:

Kurt C. from Seattle wants to know if I think the Chiefs should give up on second-year quarterback Ricky Stanzi.

Bill Williamson: No, it is his first season in offensive coordinator Brian Daboll’s system; he deserves another. Now, if Stanzi, a fifth-round pick last season, can’t make the jump to being the backup next year, the Chiefs might want to cut ties with him at that point.

Mike from Colorado Springs, Colo., wants to know if I think Caleb Hanie is worth keeping in Denver.

BW: It depends if the team sees any value in him. I’d probably pick up another veteran in the coming days and help to continue to develop rookie Brock Osweiler this year. I was never big on Hanie. I think bringing along Osweiler is the way to go.

Eric from Fresno, Calif., wants to know if I think Vincent Brown can help the Chargers this season.

BW: Well, it depends on if he has a clean recovery from the broken ankle he suffered in the second preseason game. If there are no setbacks, I think we could see Brown help in the second half. He’d need some time to shake off the rust, but this is a player who was very polished this summer and getting him back for the stretch run would help the Chargers.
