Chargers RB Ryan Mathews takes big step

Ryan Mathews has vowed to be ready to play when the San Diego Chargers open the season at Oakland on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” on Sept. 10.

Monday, Mathews took a big step toward reaching his goal. U-T San Diego reported that the promising running back is back to practice. Mathews broke his clavicle Aug. 9 on his first preseason carry of the year. Mathews has maintained he will be ready to play against Oakland. The team has been more cautious in their plans. The Chargers gave a timetable of 4-6 weeks.

The fact Mathews is practicing doesn’t mean he will play Monday, but it is a great sign he's getting closer to being ready. I’m sure the team will monitor him closely before making a final decision on his availability Monday.

UPDATE: Mathews told U-T San Diego that he is “very hopeful” he will play against Oakland. He has yet to be cleared for contact, so this is very much a fluid situation.
