Here is a look at the Raiders and what needs to be done after the break.
Reason they are in their current state: I don’t think the Raiders’ record is a shock. Whether fans liked it or not, this was going to be a rebuilding year in Oakland. Yes, the Raiders were 8-8 last year, but because of salary cap issues and a dearth of draft picks, the Raiders were starting over in many ways. This team is not very deep and it has dealt with its share of injuries. In the end, the Raiders don’t have as much talent as a lot of teams in the NFL.
Best player so far: There are good players on this roster, but few have stepped up. Tight end Brandon Myers has 16 catches (second on the team) for 228 yards. This position was a big question mark, but Myers, known best as a blocker, has taken the next step in his career. He is becoming a solid player and the tight end spot is no longer a major concern.
What needs to be done: The Raiders needs to get better on both sides of the ball, but there are obvious needs on defense. Oakland has allowed 125 points in four games. It is the most the team has allowed through four games since 1962. Oakland has allowed 772 passing yards in the past two games and it has three sacks in four games. The vaunted defensive line does not look good as veterans Richard Seymour and Tommy Kelly look old.
Fearless forecast: It might get worse before it gets better and I don’t see any quick fixes here. I think, overall, the program has the right idea, but right now, there are a lot of issues.
