Midweek mail call:
Kaden from Utah wants to know if I think former LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu will be a fit for the AFC West in the 2013 draft.
Bill Williamson: Hard to say. I think Mathieu will go between Rounds 3-5. Each team in the division could use cornerback depth. That can be said for every team in the NFL. Mathieu has special ball-handling abilities, but he has some flaws as a cornerback and the fact that he missed this season due to off-field issues will raise some red flags. I don’t think he will be a priority pick for any team, but he is worth considering.
Eli from Santa Monica, Calif. wants to know if I think Miami left tackle Jake Longcould be a fit for the Chargers in 2013.
BW: I’ve thought about that. If he gets on the open market, I think the Chargers should consider him. This is a team that currently is on pace for the No. 6 pick in the draft. Right now, left tackle is probably the area the team will focus on with the pick. Getting a talent like Long would allow the Chargers to address another area in the first round of the draft. Long didn’t have a great year, but he is a plus-player. He’d make San Diego better.
Darren from Buffalo wants to know if I think we could see Denver rookie quarterback Brock Osweilerin Week 17 this season.
BW: If the Broncos’ playoff seeding is locked in going into the season finale at home against Kansas City, I could see Peyton Manning playing a quarter or so and then giving way to Osweiler. That would keep Manning fresh and give the second-round pick some rare playing time. He will be needed at some point, so Denver might as well use him if the opportunity presents itself.
