In the AFC West at least, it seems fans are uneasy about the idea of their team drafting Notre Dame inside linebacker Manti Te'o in next week’s draft.
In our poll this week, we asked fans if they would be comfortable if their favorite team drafted Te’o. As of 5:30 p.m. ET Wednesday, 53 percent of votes said 'no', while 47 percent voted 'yes.'
Te’o became a polarizing figure after his decorated college career ended when he was involved in hoax involving girlfriend who had reportedly died. He also had a poor showing against Alabama in the national title game, followed by a poor combine performance.
Praised on and off the field, Te’o was considered a potential No. 1 overall pick during the 2012 college football season. Many league observers still think Te’o will be a first-round pick because of his overall success, improvement at his pro day, and the fact that the hoax appears to be behind him.
Theoretically, all four AFC West teams could use middle linebackers. San Diego, which has the No. 11 pick, has reportedly brought Te’o in for a visit. That is probably for a trade-down scenario, or if he falls to the second round.
I was a bit surprised that the ‘no votes’ won this poll. I think NFL teams are, for the most part, comfortable with Te’o and are confident the strange hoax is behind him. Still, this vote says Te’o still faces some skepticism in the public. Thanks to everyone who played along.
