AFC West player of the week

We were tempted to give the player of the week award to San Diego kicker Nate Kaeding. His 52-yard field goal with three seconds to go to beat Cincinnati, 27-24, was a thing of beauty.

But Kaeding’s game winner would not have been possible if it were not for San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers. Rivers, who threw for 308 yards, was brilliant on the final drive of the game. Thus Rivers is our player of the week as the Chargers clinched the AFC West division title for the fourth straight season Sunday.

Rivers led San Diego 46 yards in less than a minute without a timeout to set up Kaeding’s field goal. Rivers was his usual clutch and cool self as he engineered the wild rally.

It was another reminder that Rivers is quietly becoming one of the very best quarterbacks in the NFL.
