There is no doubt Oakland cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is going to be the top free-agent prize whenever free agency rolls around.
AsomughaHe is the best player available on the open market and he is expected to receive a huge contract. However, Bucky Brooks of NFL.com is not sure Asomugha is going to be worth a monster deal.
Brooks points out Asomugha’s age (Wednesday is Asomugha’s 30th birthday) and his lack of production (he has just 11 career interceptions and two in the past three seasons) as reasons why teams should be worried. Brooks summarizes that it might not be wise to think Asomugha is a difference maker for a team on the cusp of a Super Bowl title.
I agree that his age and career interceptions numbers might be reason for pause. But Asomugha keeps himself in great shape and he can help a team for another five years. I think his lack of interceptions are not a big deal. Teams rarely throw the ball in Asomugha’s direction. How can a player get interceptions if the ball is not coming his way?
Asomugha is a shutdown cornerback and he plays one of the most important positions on the field. He will be worth every penny he gets and I’m sure there will be plenty of suitors for him.
