Is Elvis Dumervil on his way out of Denver?

I’m not surprised by the CBSSports.com report that states the Denver Broncos want pass-rusher Elvis Dumervil to take a pay cut.

I’ve heard rumblings about that for the past few days and his future has been on my radar. The report states the Broncos want Dumervil to reduce his salary from $12 million.

I get the sense Denver doesn’t think Dumervil has produced enough to warrant such a premier salary. Dumervil has been overshadowed by 2011 No. 2 overall pick Von Miller. He is one of the game’s best pass-rushers and best overall defensive players.

Dumervil, who has 20.5 sacks the past two seasons, is now a complementary player in Denver. Those types of players usually don’t make top dollar.

I can see the Broncos, who could always try to trade the defensive end, having trouble getting Dumervil to agree to a straight pay cut. Pass-rushers get premium dollar on the open market. Dumervil, 29, could attract interest on the market. He could easily take his chances and call Denver’s bluff.

If the Broncos do jettison Dumervil, I could see them picking up a veteran. Former Indianapolis star Dwight Freeney would make sense. He has already been on record saying former Colts teammate Peyton Manning has been recruiting him to Denver.
