Haley: Cassel broke his hand

UPDATE: This comes as no surprise: Cassel is being put on the injured reserve. That was the expectation when he was injured.

UPDATE: The Chiefs announced the Cassel move. Receiver Jeremy Horne was promoted from the practice squad.

Don’t expect to see Matt Cassel anytime soon. His significant hand injury turned out to be a broken hand. But, at least, he doesn’t have any structural damage.

Kansas City coach Todd Haley confirmed Monday to Suzy Kolber that Cassel broke his right hand Nov. 13 against Denver. Haley said there is no ligament damage in the hand. Previously, the team has referred to the injury only as "significant." He had surgery on the hand last week.

Fox Sports reported Sunday that the hand was broken and Cassel will be out for the rest of the season. The team publicly has held out hope Cassel could perhaps return late in the season, although it has been widely expected that Cassel's season likely is over.

Tyler Palko is taking over as Kansas City's starting quarterback against the New England Patriots on Monday night. Palko, 28, has thrown 13 passes in the NFL.
