Rolando McClain gets to camp on time

NAPA, Calif. -- The Raiders win.

The battle of getting the first first-round pick signed in the AFC West, that it.

The Raiders announced hours before the start of training camp that they have signed No. 8 overall pick Rolando McClain. He is the third first-round pick to sign in the NFL. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting McClain signed a 5-year, $40 million contract that included $23 million guaranteed. Oakland has now signed its entire draft class.

Kudos to Oakland and to McClain for getting the deal done. McClain vowed to be at camp on time, and he will be. This is an impressive, dedicated player and give him a lot of credit for not waiting for the market to set before signing.

Previously, the highest pick to sign was Dallas’ Dez Bryant, who was the No. 24 pick. So the Raiders and McClain built their own parameters without waiting for the top-10 market to set itself.

Oakland has done an outstanding job of getting its first-round picks signed since the long JaMarcus Russell holdout in 2007. We all know how that one ended. All three top picks since then have been to camp on time.

Meanwhile, Kansas City signed third-round pick Jon Asamoah on Thursday morning.

There are four unsigned rookies in the division, all first rounders. They are Denver’s Demaryius Thomas and Tim Tebow, Kansas City’s Eric Berry and San Diego’s Ryan Mathews. Indications are that Tebow might be the next to sign.
