Denver promotes QB Hackney

As expected, the Broncos promoted quarterback Darrell Hackney from the practice squad on Saturday.

To make room for Hackney, Denver waived tackle Matt Murphy. He was signed Monday. Denver was planning to elevate Hackney all week. Really, it has no choice. He is the only backup to starting quarterback Jay Cutler.

Backup Patrick Ramsey was lost for the season in a 41-7 loss at New England on Oct. 19. Ramsey was spelling Cutler for a short period of time because Cutler had a finger injury. Cutler is completely healthy heading into Sunday's game against visiting Miami.

Cutler needs to stay healthy because Hackney has no NFL playing experience. Still, Denver coach Mike Shanahan has long been a fan of Hackney and the team has no current plans of signing a veteran backup such as Daunte Culpepper.
