Flush the Pocket: Dan Williams returns

Flush the Pocket will be your daily morning dose of the Arizona Cardinals. It’ll recap the top storyline from the previous day and give you a look at what everyone is saying locally and nationally.

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Dan Williams sat in front of his locker Wednesday answering the careful yet steady questions about his last two weeks.

They’re not a stretch of time anyone wants to endure, but Williams, who lost his father, Thomas, on Sept. 20 in a car accident while Thomas was driving his wife and daughter to watch Dan play in New Orleans, was the same old Big Dan.

He was stoic. He was strong. He even laughed.

“Anytime you lose a parent, it’s definitely a tough loss but you know, my family (is) being very supportive,” Williams said. “I just count my blessing that my mom and my sister, they’re OK. They’re doing all right.”

Williams missed the New Orleans and Tampa Bay games, and was excused from all team activities from Sept. 20 until he returned Tuesday. Williams said his mother and sister were out of the hospital and doing well. His mother had a few bruised ribs and his sister had a fracture in her back.

Getting back to football was what he needed and what Williams’ father wanted.

“It’s not like I’m running away from it,” Williams said. “You can’t get away from it. Just get back to your normal life. It’s time to move on. I mean, I feel like my dad was a huge football fan. He would have it no other way.”

When Williams went to the gas station and the local corner store in Memphis to tell friends and family about his father’s death, some broke down in tears right there.

“Just type of guy he was,” Williams said. “He touched a lot of people.”

But none more than his children.

“Anybody (who) knew him (knew) he was a great guy,” Williams said. “For the most part, I know my father, he’s always smiling down and I believe he’s watching over me now. Just the fact that for 26 years, he was a great man to me, I’m very thankful for that.

“I think he definitely prepared me for life. I can’t really ask for too much more.”
