Flush the Pocket: Honey Badger a bargain

Flush the Pocket will be your daily morning dose of the Arizona Cardinals. It’ll recap the top story line from the previous day and give you a look at what everyone is saying locally and nationally.

TEMPE, Ariz. -- A week before he was named the NFC’s Defensive Rookie of the Month on Thursday, Arizona Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu was named one of the league’s top bargains.

The Sporting News included Mathieu on its list of the 25 best players who are giving their team the best bang for their buck. He was No. 22. Topping the list was Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson.

Mathieu’s base salary this season is $405,000, part of a back-loaded contract that that protects the Cardinals in case Mathieu gets in trouble with the law again. His career at LSU was cut short when he was dismissed from the football team in Aug. 2012. He was arrested two months later.

Mathieu, who dropped to the third round in April’s draft because of his off-the-field issues, has started six of eight games for the Cardinals and is widely considered the steal of the draft.
