New stadiums won't stop Cardinals president from bidding on Super Bowls

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Arizona Cardinals president Michael Bidwill sees new stadiums in Los Angeles and Las Vegas as competition to University of Phoenix Stadium hosting major sporting events, but he said they won't stop the Glendale venue from bidding on Super bowls, Final Fours and College Football Playoff games.

"We'd like to get them all," said Bidwill, who added there's a plan to bid on all three events. "The question is, when will we get them?"

The NFL has awarded Super Bowls through 2022, with all the games going to new, renovated and updated stadiums. The next Final Four available will be 2023. The next open College Football Playoff Championship Game is during the 2020-21 season.

Bidwill said the NFL wants to get in a rotation of Super Bowl hosts, of which the Phoenix metro area would be a part.

"Getting the game back to Arizona is definitely something everybody wants to do," Bidwill said. "I'll be doing my part to lobby the other owners to make sure we land them and I'm confident that we'll get one sometime soon down the line, but I just can't say when."

Upgrades to University of Phoenix Stadium's video boards, sound system and Wi-Fi over the last few years, along with a two-phase renovation to the stadium's club level, will help University of Phoenix Stadium compete for major sporting events, according to Bidwill. "It'll raise our game," he said. "We're going to be competing again soon."

The two stadiums in the West that will provide the most competition -- in Las Vegas and Inglewood, California -- are scheduled to open in 2020. The Las Vegas stadium will be a covered venue and house the Raiders. The Los Angeles-area stadium will be home to both the Rams and Chargers.

Bidwill isn't concerned with University of Phoenix Stadium no longer being the only covered football stadium west of Texas. "I think it's fine," he said. "We're still a great destination. The Phoenix and Scottsdale area are awesome areas, and we've got a lot to offer. A lot of people like coming here anyway, so I think it's just not going to be Dallas and L.A. but Las Vegas will be out there as well.

"There's some great venues out there. I look forward to competing with them. We compete with them on the field; we don't mind competing off the field with them as well."
