TEMPE, Ariz. -- The last time the Arizona Cardinals met the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football, Rod Tidwell stole the show.
Yes, that Rod Tidwell from “Jerry Maguire” fame.
Tidwell, played by actor Cuba Gooding Jr., was the Cardinals wide receiver who made the game-winning catch, got knocked upside down and then was unconscious, only to come to and celebrate his touchdown with an epic dance.
The game that Tidwell’s catch helped the Cardinals was real -- kind of.
The Cardinals did play the Cowboys on Monday Night Football on Christmas Day 1995 at Sun Devil Stadium and scenes from that game were included in the final cut of the movie, including one of the more memorable football scenes when Cardinals fullback Larry Centers jumped over Cowboys cornerback Larry Brown.
The Cardinals lost the real game, 37-13, but won the fictional game. After Tidwell’s touchdown in the movie, Arizona was leading 20-17 with 1:07 left.
Other parts of the movie were filmed around Arizona.
The locker-room scene involving Tidwell and Maguire, played by Tom Cruise, was filmed at the Cardinals’ Tempe facility. Arizona renovated that locker room during the 2015 offseason.
