If there’s one offensive coordinator in the NFL who knows just how stout the Cardinals’ defense was this past season, it’s Seattle’s Darrell Bevell.
The Scottsdale native couldn’t figure out a way to get the Seahawks’ offense through, over or around the Cardinals in Arizona’s 17-10 win in Seattle in Week 17.
“They’re a very strong defense,” Bevell said during Super Bowl media day. “They did a really nice job of taking care of us in all areas. We didn’t throw the ball very well. We didn’t run the ball as well as we hoped we would. They just played a really strong game. We were able to get the lead late in the game, but we weren’t able to hang onto it.
"They’re doing some great things there.”
Bevell would know. He interviewed for the Cardinals' head coaching job last January before it went to Bruce Arians.
Although Bevell has been in the NFC West since 2011, he’s watched it transform into the toughest division in the NFL. And he knew its reputation in the years leading up to his arrival.
“It kind of went from the embarrassment of the league to really one of the best; with Arizona [which] could’ve made the playoffs,” Bevell said. “Their team was good enough to do it.”
