Every day this week, I will take a deeper look into one of five starting positions that is up for grabs come training camp. I’ll dissect why it’s available, who’s in the lead to take it over, their competition and give an overall outlook.
These are the five more important positions that don’t have a clearly defined starter.
Last year’s starter: Karlos Dansby
Why is it up for grabs: With Dansby leaving a hole in the lineup, Kevin Minter is the likely starter but it’s not in stone just yet.
Leader in the clubhouse: Minter
Outlook: This job is Minter’s to lose and the Cardinals want him to take over for Dansby, who chased the money to Cleveland. Before he left, he groomed Minter, who’s already showing signs of maturity in the huddle. Depending on Daryl Washington's suspension, Foote will likely be Minter’s primary back-up while Alexander will shuffle between inside and outside linebacker, and special teams. Minter would have to show the coaching staff that he’s not ready to be the quarterback of the defense in order for him not to get the job.
