My look at the Arizona Cardinals' list of unrestricted free agents continues with the quarterback of last year's defense who's in a unique situation. He's already joined the Cardinals' coaching staff but can still return to the field if he wants.
Next up: Larry Foote, LB
Reason to re-sign: Foote is in a unique situation. He signed a contract to be an assistant coach, so it’s up to him if he wants to return to the field and he has until the roster is cut down to 75 to decide. He’s an experienced veteran who was among the smartest defensive players last season. He was signed in May, and by July he was ready to assume a role as the defense’s quarterback. At 34, Foote was the second-leading tackler on a defense that lost three starters to injuries or suspensions for the season by the end of Week 1. He showed he still had plenty left in the tank.
Reason not to re-sign: Like I said above, it’s Foote’s decision to retire or not. But at 34, he started strong because he played in just one game in 2013 and had his legs for most of the season but it was easy to see that by the end of the season he was slowing down. He played all but one snap except in the first 15 games and had the season finale off. The main reason for not bringing Foote back is simply because his quickness isn’t what it once was.
Prediction: I think Foote retires and spends the next few years on Arizona’s coaching staff.
