Ravens 2014 player rankings: No. 6

ESPN.com polled 18 Baltimore media members for their top 20 players on the 2014 Baltimore Ravens roster. The countdown will run through the middle of July, just before the start of training camp. You can click here for an introduction on how the blog put together the rankings.

Let's continue the countdown ...

No. 6: ELVIS DUMERVIL

Position: Outside linebacker

Total points: 236. First-place votes: None.

Highest ranking: No. 3. Lowest ranking: No. 15.

What you need to know: In his first season with the Ravens, Dumervil finished second on the team in sacks with 9.5. He was the highest-graded player on the Ravens by Pro Football Focus. Statistically, it was an up-and-down season for Dumervil. He recorded 8.5 sacks in his first nine games before disappearing down the stretch. Dumervil managed one sack in his final six games. His 31 tackles were his fewest since 2008.

Where Dumervil should be ranked: I had Dumervil much lower than most voters. He was No. 11 on my rankings because it was difficult to put a part-time player any higher. Dumervil only played 51 percent of the Ravens' snaps. There were also three games in which he didn't record a tackle.

File this away: Dumervil has recorded multiple sacks in 22 games since 2006, which is the fourth-most in the NFL during that time. Only Jared Allen, DeMarcus Ware and Robert Mathis has had more.

What the Ravens are saying about Dumervil: “He’s a heck of a player. The guy has got extraordinary balance, power, and for not a real tall guy, long arms and knows how to use them. I think he plays with great leverage, has got good speed. He’s as advertised." -- defensive coordinator Dean Pees
