ESPN.com polled 18 Baltimore media members for their top 20 players on the 2014 Baltimore Ravens roster. The countdown will run through the end of the week, just before the start of training camp.
Let's continue the countdown ...
No. 5: JIMMY SMITH
Total points: 237. First-place votes: None.
Highest ranking: No. 3. Lowest ranking: Not ranked.
What you need to know: Before his arrest over the weekend, Smith had made headlines for being one of the best young cornerbacks in the league. Last season, Smith finally lived up to the expectations of being a first-round pick by staying healthy and playing with confidence. He limited some of the best receivers in the league: Cincinnati's A.J. Green, Cleveland’s Josh Gordon, Pittsburgh's Antonio Brown and Chicago's Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall.
Where Jimmy Smith should be ranked: Even though Smith is the Ravens' best young defender, I had him slightly lower at No. 8. He's definitely on the rise, so he could be one of the top five players on the team by the end of the season. This could be the season when Smith makes his first Pro Bowl.
File this away: Smith broke up a career-high 16 passes last season, which was five more than his first two seasons combined (11).
What the Ravens are saying about Jimmy Smith: “He, more than ever since he's been here, understands how to play corner. It makes playing a lot easier. You're not chasing your tail as a corner out there. That's what is breeding that confidence." -- coach John Harbaugh
