A day after the Baltimore Ravens lost tight end Owen Daniels, a potential replacement hit the market.
Scott Chandler, a pass-catching tight end, was released by the Bills on Wednesday. It created $2.25 million in cap space for the Bills, who are expected to pursue transition tag player Charles Clay.
Chandler makes a lot of sense for the Ravens because they need a pass-catching tight end and he's the best one on the market right now. He's a veteran target who has averaged 45 catches and scored 17 touchdowns over the past four seasons. The Ravens only have two experienced and healthy tight ends on the roster right now: Crockett Gillmore and Phillip Supernaw.
Tight end is among the priorities for the Ravens because Daniels signed a three-year, $12 million deal with the Broncos (which was too expensive for the Ravens) and Dennis Pitta might not play after undergoing hip surgeries in back-to-back seasons. It's also a position with not many great options in free agency.
Chandler is not known for being a blocker and doesn't have great athleticism. But Chandler is 29 (three years younger than Daniels) and would provide a big target (he's 6-foot-7) for Joe Flacco in the red zone.
The Ravens have between $9 million and $10 million in cap space after trading defensive tackle Haloti Ngata on Tuesday.
