You want to be an NFL coach? I suggest you send a resume to the Baltimore Ravens.
Mike Pettine became the latest former Ravens assistant to land an NFL head coaching job when the Cleveland Browns hired him Thursday. In total, there have been 13 former Ravens coaches who have eventually become NFL head coaches. Seven of the current 32 NFL head coaches -- 21 percent -- have roots with the Ravens: Pettine (Browns), Marvin Lewis (Bengals), Rex Ryan (Jets), Mike Smith (Falcons), Chuck Pagano (Colts), Jim Caldwell (Lions) and Ken Whisenhunt (Titans).
This is an amazingly high number, especially when you consider this is a franchise that has been in existence for 18 years.
Pettine joined Caldwell and Whisenhunt as former Ravens assistants who were hired as NFL coaches this season. Pettine's first NFL coaching job was with the Ravens in 2002 as a coaching assistant. He eventually became the team's outside linebackers coach before leaving with Ryan in 2009 to go to the New York Jets.
The reason for this pipeline is because other teams want to tap into the Ravens' success, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Lewis, the Ravens' first defensive coordinator, became the Cincinnati Bengals' head coach in 2003 after a one-year stint with the Washington Redskins. Mike Nolan, who replaced Lewis as the Ravens' defensive coordinator, was hired as the San Francisco 49ers head coach in 2005. Ryan, who took over for Nolan, became the New York Jets' head coach in 2009. Three years later, Pagano went from being the Ravens' defensive coordinator to the Indianapolis Colts' head coach.
Other former Ravens defensive assistants who have become head coaches are: Pettine, Mike Smith, Jack Del Rio, Mike Singletary and Jim Schwartz. This isn't a surprise when you consider the Ravens regularly have ranked among the best defenses over the last 14 seasons. Middle linebacker Ray Lewis used to joke that he should get a commission for the amount of Ravens defensive coaches who have become head coaches.
