As the Baltimore Ravens kick off their rookie minicamp Friday, here's a look at how I project the team's depth chart on offense:
Quarterback
Projected starter: Joe Flacco
Backups: Tyrod Taylor, Keith Wenning
Comment: Flacco is entering his seventh season as the Ravens' starter. Taylor is expected to remain the top backup this year, and Wenning could step into that role in 2015, when Taylor is a free agent.
Running back
Projected starter: Ray Rice
Backups: Kyle Juszczyk (FB), Bernard Pierce; Lorenzo Taliaferro; Justin Forsett
Comment: Rice is facing a suspension from the NFL, and Pierce is not expected to practice until the start of training camp because of offseason shoulder surgery. Taliaferro is the favorite to be the No. 3 back because he's a fourth-round pick, but Forsett is veteran insurance in case Taliaferro isn't ready.
Wide receiver
Projected starters: Torrey Smith and Steve Smith
Backups: Marlon Brown, Jacoby Jones, Michael Campanaro, Aaron Mellette, Deonte Thompson and LaQuan Williams
Comment: The Ravens know their top four wide receivers (Torrey Smith, Steve Smith, Marlon Brown and Jacoby Jones). The question is whether they're carrying a total of five or six, which will determine whether Campanaro, Thompson, Mellette and Williams are fighting for one or two spots. With Tandon Doss gone, Campanaro's experience as a returner could give him the edge.
Tight end
Projected starters: Dennis Pitta and Owen Daniels
Backups: Crockett Gillmore and Matt Furstenburg
Comment: The Ravens are expected to use two tight ends in their base offense. Gillmore, a third-round pick, is the No. 3 tight end and may be the best inline blocker of the group.
Offensive line
Projected starters: Eugene Monroe (LT), Kelechi Osemele (LG), Jeremy Zuttah (C), Marshal Yanda (RG) and Rick Wagner (RT)
Backups: Ryan Jensen (G-C), Gino Gradkowski (C), A.Q. Shipley (C-G), John Urschel (G-C), James Hurst (OT) and Jah Reid (G-T)
Comment: The biggest uncertainty on offense is right tackle. Wagner is penciled in as the starter after the Ravens didn't draft one. There has been speculation that veteran tackle Eric Winston, who played under Gary Kubiak for six seasons, will sign with the Ravens after June 1 (so it doesn't count against the Ravens' compensatory picks). There's also a chance that Osemele could move to right tackle and Jensen would start at left guard. Hurst, the Ravens' most high-profile undrafted rookie, has a shot to make the team as a backup.
