Five quarterbacks from the Big 12 have made the preseason Davey O'Brien Award Watch List, tied with the ACC for the most of any conference in college football.
The O'Brien Trophy is given to the nation's most outstanding quarterback, and 13 seniors, 13 juniors and four sophomores make up the 30-man list to begin the season. It will be trimmed to 16 semifinalists on Oct. 25 before three finalists are announced on Nov. 22.
The winner will be announced at ESPN's College Football Awards Show on Dec. 9 and be honored at the O'Brien Awards Dinner on Feb. 21 in Fort Worth, Texas.
Big 12 quarterbacks have won the award six times since 2001, but BYU is the all-time, single-school leader, with four winners. Oklahoma leads the Big 12 with three, including Sam Bradford in 2008. Texas is the only other Big 12 school with multiple winners after Colt McCoy gave the Longhorns a second O'Brien Award last season.
Here's who the O'Brien voters (myself included) will be watching in the backfield from the Big 12 this season:
Blaine Gabbert, Missouri
Robert Griffin III, Baylor
Jerrod Johnson, Texas A&M
Landry Jones, Oklahoma
Taylor Potts, Texas Tech
The trophy was first given in 1981 as a quarterback award, and Gabbert, Griffin, Johnson and Potts would all be their school's first winner.
