Oklahoma State has just announced that redshirt freshman running back Kye Staley will miss the upcoming season after sustaining an injury to his right knee in the Cowboys' scrimmage Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium.

Staley was challenging for playing time at the Cowboys' deepest position. Among those players in front of him include Big 12 rushing leader Kendall Hunter and seniors Keith Toston and Beau Johnson.

Staley had caught Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy's attention by his weight loss to get in better playing condition before fall practice, going from 241 pounds to 212.

"It pains us to see Kye get hurt. We wish him the best in a speedy recovery and we look forward to his return,” Gundy said in a prepared statement. "He worked very hard in the offseason and even though we know injuries are a part of the game, it's a very difficult thing to endure.”

Staley redshirted as a true freshman in 2008.
