Griffin honored that kids might be named after him

Robert Griffin has been featured on magazine covers and on the front pages of newspapers. He’s seen people wear his jerseys and heard them chant his name after big plays.

But even after all that acclaim, Griffin was unprepared for an honor that could be happening for him very soon.

One devoted Baylor fan, knowledgable about the Bears’ turnaround with their mercurial quarterback, has already arranged to name his son “Robert Griffin” after the Baylor sophomore if his wife delivers a bouncing baby boy in a few weeks.

Baylor fans Jason and Chelse Hoskins were trying for an interesting name for their baby, not surprisingly with a twist on Baylor.

Chelse Hoskins graduated from Baylor in 1995, and Jason grew up in Waco and graduated from Waco High School in 1993. And the couple met while they were both working at a Sears department store in Waco.

In honor of Chelse's father, Robert, and the maiden name of Jason's grandmother (Griffin), the Hoskins have decided to name their baby Robert Griffin.

Jason Hoskins told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram he originally thought about the name of Robert Griffin as a joke. But the name started growing on him -- particularly after Griffin's landmark freshman season where he accounted for a school-record 28 touchdowns and set an FBS subdivision record by throwing the first 209 passes of his career without an interception.

"It was mainly to honor the two families,'' Jason Hoskins told the Star-Telegram. "But the fact that it was Robert Griffin the quarterback, it kind of put it over the top because we're both Baylor fans. That's pretty much how we came up with it.''

Griffin, who hopes to lead the Bears to their first bowl berth since 1994 with a big season, was surprised by the honor when he was told about it earlier this week.

“I don’t know what to say about that,” Griffin said after learning about his potential namesake. “It’s an honor to hear about it.”

The baby is due between Nov. 8 and Nov. 10. The baby's arrival could be coming just as the Bears try to nail down that elusive bowl berth during a punishing finish that includes games against Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.
