Many are wondering of the whereabouts of top Big 12 official and Austin resident Randy Christal this week.
Just a guess here, but I bet he's not within 300 miles of Jones AT&T Stadium.
Christal, you'll remember, was the centerpiece in claims by Texas Tech coach Mike Leach of incompetence and bias after Texas' 59-43 victory in Austin last season. The Red Raiders had two touchdowns taken away in last season's game -- one on a holding penalty and once overturned by a replay.
After the game, Leach went on a 17-minute rant about the officiating in the game. It earned him a record $10,000 fine from the conference the following week.
Leach's most damning point was that Christal shouldn't have worked the game because of where he lived.
"I think it's disturbing that Austin residents would be involved in this," Leach said after the game. "Likewise, I think it would be disturbing if a Lubbock resident was involved in the officiating of a game."
Leach's vituperation worked into a crescendo at the end.
"I'm not going to be quiet anymore," Leach said. "Am I condemning the crew? Hell, yeah, I'm condemning the crew."
The Austin American-Statesman reported earlier today that Saturday's crew will be the same crew that worked the Texas-Oklahoma game earlier this month. The referee on that crew is Karl Richins, who lives int the Salt Lake City area. The American-Statesman reported that three members on Richins' crew are from Christal's old crew last season.
