Big 12 recruiting update

It's getting close to National Signing Day and prospects are firming up their commitments on an hourly basis around the country.

That's why the daily missives of Tom Luginbill, the national recruiting director of ESPN.com's Scouts Inc., are so valuable this time of year.

Here's the lowdown on Big 12-related prospects that Luginbill and his hard-working staff had ready for us this afternoon.

DE Clarence Lee

Jefferson, Texas

Scouts Grade: 77

Position Rank: 80

Three-star defensive end Clarence Lee switched his commitment from Houston to Baylor, as the Bears received a Class of 2010 commitment from the 6-foot-3, 210-pound prospect.

Lee was also offered scholarships by Kansas State, Missouri, Tulsa, UTEP and Louisiana Tech.

QB Gabriel Henderson

Raleigh, N.C.

Southeast Raleigh H.S.

Scouts Grade: 72

Position Rank: 130

Underrated quarterback Gabriel Henderson is considering Kansas among his three finalists after pulling his pledge from Kent.

Also among the finalists for the 6-foot, 185-pound prospect include East Carolina and Toledo.

As a senior, Henderson passed for 2,600 yards and 31 touchdowns. He added 1,008 rushing yards and eight scores.

WR Evan Spencer

Vernon Hills, Ill.

Scouts Grade: 45

Junior wide receiver Evan Spencer still is considering Nebraska among his scholarship offers in the Class of 2011.

Spencer recently picked up offers from Notre Dame and Ohio State, the ESPN affiliate Web site IrishSportsDaily.com reports.

Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois have also offered scholarships to the 6-foot, 178-pound prospect with Buckeye ties. Both his parents went to Ohio State and his father, Tim, played in the Horseshoe.

"I don't have any leader," Spencer stated. "When I was five and younger, I always dreamed of playing there (at Ohio State). Now I'm extremely open minded. I'm not going to put them over anyone else because my dad went there and my parents went there. I'm not the type of person where they offer me and I'm committing right now. I'm definitely going to wait and look at all my options."

OLB Joe Carmical

Monticello, Ark.

A 6-foot-1, 220-pound linebacker, Joe Carmical of Monticello, Ark., has made a Class of 2010 decision to play for Texas Tech.

Arkansas State and Marshall had also offered.

OLB Glen Stanley

Ocala, Fla.

Eastern Arizona College (Ariz.)

6-foot-2, 240-pound linebacker Glen Stanley of Eastern Arizona Community College has given a Class of 2010 pledge to the Vols and decommitted from Central Florida.

Originally from Vanguard (Ocala, Fla.), he played as a true freshman at Bowling Green.

Among others, Stanley also holds offers from Arizona State, South Florida, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and San Diego State.

WR DaVaris Daniels

Vernon Hills, Ill.

2011 wide receiver DaVaris Daniels (Vernon Hills, Ill.) has received a scholarship offer from Notre Dame, ESPN affiliate Web site IrishSportsDaily.com reports.

Illinois, Miami-FL, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Iowa have also offered scholarships to the 6-foot-2, 165-pound ESPNU 150 Watch List talent.

"(Notre Dame assistant coach Chuck Martin) was talking about how Coach Kelly has never really had real wide receivers, people that have always played that position, but transferred over and he made that work," Daniels said. "He showed he can do it with people that had to learn the receiver spot, imagine what he could do with you."

Daniels' father is NFL defensive lineman Phillip Daniels. His godfather is Andre Jones, the father of Irish freshman receiver Tai-ler Jones. The two grew up together before Daniels moved away from Georgia.

He caught 10 touchdown passes as a junior while also seeing time at quarterback.

DT Anthony White

Battle Creek, Mich.

Fort Scott Community College (Kan.)

Fort Scott Community College (Kan.) defensive tackle Anthony White has committed to Michigan State over Nebraska, ESPN affiliate Web site SpartanTailgate.com reports.

He has three years of eligibility remaining. White is originally from Battle Creek, Mich. and a former high school teammate of current Spartans running back Larry Caper.

"I can't explain how great it feels," White said. "I think I will have a great future there."

WR Josey Nwankwo

Mesquite, Texas

Horn H.S.

Scouts Grade: 40

6-foot-2, 175-pound wide receiver Josey Nwankwo of Horn (Mesquite, Texas) has accepted a Class of 2010 offer from the Louisiana-Lafayette Cajuns.

He was also recruited by TCU, Baylor, Houston and North Texas.

Nwanko ran an electronically-timed 5.2 40-yard dash, 4.6 20-yard shuttle and had a 30.1-inch vertical at the Dallas Nike Combine.

DT Michael Fleurizard

Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Dwyer H.S.

Scouts Grade: 40

Marshall has added to its defensive line with the commitment of Mike Fleurizard, a 6-foot, 285-pound tackle from Dwyer (West Palm Beach, Fla.), for the Class of 2010.

Iowa State and Eastern Michigan also offered a scholarship to Fleurizard.

ATH Derron Smith

Banning, Calif.

Banning H.S.

Scouts Grade: 74

Position Rank: 174

Banning HS (Banning, Calif.) safety Derron Smith has accepted an offer from Fresno State for the Class of 2010.

The 6-foot, 195-pound prospect was also recruited by Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico State, San Diego State and San Jose State.

"All my visits were great but this one really stood out," Smith told ESPN's Greg Biggins. "I felt so comfortable with the players and coaches there and I knew it was the best place for me. I actually committed Saturday night. I didn't need to wait that long to know it was the best spot for me and where I would fit in the best."

As a junior, he threw for 1,214 yards and nine touchdowns while also rushing for 1,094 yards and eight more scores.

On defense, Smith registered 87 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and one interception. He also handled kicking and punting duties.
