The previous history of the Texas-Texas Tech series has been dotted with a couple of Texas struggles on previous trips to Lubbock on Nov. 1.
Nov. 1, 1980: Texas Tech 24, No. 12 Texas 20 (Lubbock) -- Tate Randle's game-saving end-zone interception of a ball tipped at the line of scrimmage late in the game preserved the victory for the Red Raiders. Tech jumped to a 24-0 lead early in the second quarter and then withstood a furious Longhorns comeback. Ted Watts provided a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown for Tech. It was a bad day for Texas quarterback Rick McIvor, who led the near comeback before leaving the game when he was poked in the eye.
Nov. 1, 1986: Texas Tech 23, Texas 21 (Lubbock) -- The game had huge ramifications for both schools and both head coaches. Tech coach David McWilliams would be hired to replace Texas coach Fred Akers early the following month. Tech jumped to an early 23-7 lead and held on for dear life after the Longhorns rallied. The Tech victory was preserved when Texas quarterback Bret Stafford was stopped on a fourth-down play late in the game by Brad Hastings and Desmond Royal. Tyrone Thurman set the stage early for the Red Raiders with a 96-yard punt return for a touchdown.
