Russell Brorsen of Kansas and Chris Ogbonnaya of Texas are among 24 student-athletes who have received the 2008-09 Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships awarded by the Big 12.
Criteria for the awards includes a cumulative grade point average of 3.500 on a 4.000 scale, participation in at least two years of intercollegiate athletics at the nominee's respective institution and completion of athletics' eligibility.
The student-athletes also must graduate from their respective member institutions within 15 months of their selection for a postgraduate scholarship and are expected to enroll in graduate/professional schools within two years of graduation. Three faculty representatives, one senior woman administrator and one director of athletics form the selection panel for the award of the $7,500 scholarship.
Brorsen was a defensive end for the Jayhawks who produced 30 tackles, a sack and two interceptions last season. He is majoring in chemistry with hopes of attending dental school.
Ogbonnaya rushed for 373 yards and four touchdowns and added 46 receptions for 540 yards and three touchdowns for the Longhorns last season as a running back. He earned separate degrees in history and corporate communications and minored in business at Texas. Additionally, he is working on his master's degree in advertising.
