Bearcats not getting USC transfer

NEWPORT, R.I. -- I had the pleasure of spending time with Cincinnati coach Butch Jones during today's Big East golf outing.

Jones doesn't play a lot of golf, but he made two unreal putts, including one that I swear had to go through a clown's mouth on the way to the hole.

Anyway, Jones told me a couple of news items. His team will not be getting USC transfer Brandon Carswell. It had been reported late last month that the junior receiver was looking to take advantage of the NCAA's get-out-of-jail free card and transfer to Cincinnati. But Carswell has decided to stay at USC. With stars like Armon Binns, D.J. Woods and another former Trojan, Vidal Hazelton, Carswell wouldn't have been assured of more playing time this year, anyway.

Jones is hopeful that Kenbrell Thompkins can play this season for the Bearcats. Thompkins, who originally signed with Tennessee but was not released by the Volunteers after Lane Kiffin left for -- you got it -- USC, has appealed to the NCAA to be immediately eligible. His appeal was heard by the NCAA in the past week, and the Bearcats hope for a ruling in their favor.

Thompkins impressed the coaching staff while practicing for Cincinnati this spring and would add valuable depth to the receiving unit.

Heading to the clam bake shortly. Will keep you updated with any news.
