What kind of odds could you have gotten last summer on the following statement: Connecticut will have more players taken on Day 1 of the 2009 NFL draft than any other Big East school.
As it stands now, with guys like Donald Brown, Darius Butler, Will Beatty and Cody Brown, UConn might very well make that statement true.
The Huskies held their pro day on Wednesday, and the talent on display was obvious. As Desmond Conner reports in the Hartford Courant, coach Randy Edsall couldn't help but look on in pride, as the program he's built from the ground up is now starting to produce top-notch professional prospects.
"This is going to be the icing on the cake after being here 10 years, knowing that we're going to have guys taken on that first day, hopefully the first round," Edsall said. "That's something a lot of young kids look at, so now we can be a big player in that arena as well."
According to Conner, the big performers included Butler -- who ran the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds -- and Beatty, who lifted 225 pounds 30 times, bettering his combine showing. New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick was among those on hand to watch, and he even asked to see quarterback Tyler Lorenzen work out at safety.
Connecticut's recruiting efforts can only be helped as the Huskies put more players in the NFL. I have a strong feeling we'll see pictures of Belichick at the pro day workout in the 2009 UConn media guide.
